Been using Patch My PC for a a while now and for some reason every time it does a scheduled update to PDF XChange Editor it makes that application the default app for PDFs. I have another app that I prefer to open PDFs files with. How can I prevent this behaviour? I had contacted the PDF XChange Editor people and they assured me it was not their app that is making this change.

Sorry for the late reply, is this still happening?
Also this is 100% on the vendor's side! their silent install makes the app the default one! if they have a command line that we can use to prevent that, then I'll be happy to add it :)

Yes it is still happening. I disabled PDF X-Change from being updated automatically by Patch MyPC.

According to PDF X-Change there is no command line parameter for silent installs to prevent it from becoming the default PDF handler. I find it strange that they do not have such a parameter as they have so many other settings one can modify.

"No - our installer would always try to set itself as the default handler for .pdf files."

Yeah that's not cool :(
In this case you can disable silent installation for PDF X-Change so you can manually uncheck the "make default app" button, until hopefully they provide a command line for this later!

Sorry but that did not work.

Here is the options I had enabled for the software. I scanned for changes and PatchMyPC started to do a silent install and it over wrote the default PDF handler.

Well I installed the new version which found 2 apps that the prior version did not tell me needed updates. However I had to stop the 2nd update since the app, PowerToys never seem to update. Powertoys had a spinning circle yet Patch MYPC app itself showed a greyed out Start Uodater button. I had to kill off Patch My PC. The same thing happened when I ran Patch My Pc 5.0.1 a second time. It showed PowerToys needed an update. When I clicked Start Updater, it appeared to down the PowerToys update, but the update was never finished.  I opened Power Toys (Preview) app. It told me there was an update available. I let it update and it finished without an issue.

Some apps just takes a long time to update, if you waited it will be done eventually.
