Seperate Apps / Updates

For various political and technical reasons, I would like to separate app publishing and update publishing in our environment.

As things stand, we treat updates and security/critical updates differently.  Security updates are published immediately, with a 14 day deadline to meet CyberEssentials+ requirements, whilst functionality/feature updates are only pushed along with the usual Patch Tuesday updates.

I have created separate ADR's for each product to achieve this.

What I would like to do, is sync PMPC once daily (~4pm EST) to receive the daily security patches but only publish application updates once a month.  As things stand, the new updates get pushed as an available install every day, whilst the updates lag behind and a handful of users find this confusing/annoying.

Is it possible to run the publisher more than once, with different sync settings.  For example, one that only pulls updates once a month on patch Tuesday, and publishes the apps to ConfigMgr and another that syncs daily and pushes the security updates to the SUP.  (or I have missed something obvious, and this can actually be done with our existing infrastructure)

Hey PDowell,

Currently there is not a way to have separate sync schedules for either Apps/Updates.

There is the below 'IDEA' over on our Feature Request page for this. I would suggest giving this a Vote so that you are subscribed and notified should the feature get added.

While it may not be ideal, you can technically install a second instance of the Publisher on a different server and control the Apps from there.

Thanks for the response, Michael.

This was one of my 'what if' solutions, that I wasn't sure was covered under the licence terms.  What I've actually done in the interim is just disable ConfigMgr Apps in Publisher (deselect Enable creation of ConfigMgr Apps) and added myself a task to re-enable it late on Patch Tuesday before hitting the Sync Now button.

You can run the publisher more than once with different settings by using distinct configurations. This can be achieved with Patch My PC (PMPC) by leveraging different configuration files or using command-line parameters.

Hello Pricedodger,

As my colleague Michael suggested, it's possible to run two instances of Publisher with different sync schedules, although it's not an ideal approach. We have a feature request for this capability, and I encourage you to upvote it.  https://ideas.patchmypc.com/ideas/PATCHMYPC-I-255
