Why does PatchMyPC require administrator permission when starting?

Because in order to update and install applications most install per-system and requires administrator. We also scan the HKLM registry to find installed apps.

My question still stands.

You do not need admin permission to search the Registry.

If I have changed the options and only want to be shown which updates are need, there is no need for admin permission.

I take care to run my Windows logins as a standard user, not as admin - and PatchMyPC always needing admin permission seems to be at odds with that.

Yea, I know - if I don't like don't use it.  But PatchMyPC is a valuable app that has chosen the least secure path when the program is first loaded.  Maybe consideration might be given to creating a version of PatchMyPC that does not initially need admin permission?

Thanks.

Installing many apps that install per-system and saving our options to HKLM does require admin rights.
