General Questions (Free Home Updater) / Re: portable apps
November 07, 2024, 05:31:19 AM
Quote from: Phoneios on November 04, 2024, 07:06:18 AMI sipmply observed that PMPC did not see my portable apps in the designated folder. I assumed that was because I had stored them in a subfolder structure, to quickly find the right tool when I need it.
PMPC will never see the portable apps you downloaded. It is not meant to do that. It won't scan your existing files, no matter what the folder structure is.

As mentioned, you first have to download within PMPC the portable apps that interest you, in the path that you can designate within the PMPC UI (bottom-right). It will then remember those apps, and offer the updated versions when they are released.

Thanks for the reports. It's a known issue, will be fixed in the next PMPC update.

Why the development of PatchMyPc has stopped? No new releases for a long time.

It hasn't stopped.

Transmission is an extremely popular free BitTorrent app available on every platform out there. Please add the Windows version to your downloads and updates. Thanks!

Isn't the Windows version still in preview/nightly status?

Does require VLC 64-bit for video playback.

Small correction here, Subtitle Edit does not require VLC at all for video playback, it's just one of the several available video playback options.

That would require Patch My PC to change all programs' default installation directories, so it's probably out of scope. Two possible workarounds:

1. Enable PMPC's "Disable silent installation..." option, so you can choose where to install each program. Less automated, but you can easily decide where to install each program.
2. Use Windows' Symbolic Links, to essentially redirect your Program Files folders to the SSD. This is an advanced, powerful feature so make sure you know what you are doing before using it.

You can handle/create Symbolic Links from a command prompt, or you can use a program for them like Link Shell Extension.

This option is already included, it can be done via the Schedule tab.
#8
That would require Patch My PC to become a completely different program (with a whole new set of functions to perform), so I am guessing it probably won't happen.

It's not a free application, so it won't be useful for users without a license.

Maybe CCleaner's new Monitoring feature is causing this problem? Try disabling it if it's enabled. (Options/Monitoring)

The problem with Java is that it won't uninstall its previous versions. They do this because some old applications require specific (=older) Java versions so if you only have the latest one, they might not work. That's rare though. Try closing your browser (always do that while installing/uninstalling Java), uninstall all Java versions then install just the latest one.

Google Earth issue will be fixed soon.  :)

I never used Chrome but may be you have some other Chrome-related window open? A download window for example, a Chrome extension or something else Google-related?
#14
If the user has only some of the applications installed (Writer and Calc for example), Patch My PC will install the complete suite when updating, not just those two.

Also, the "Delete desktop shortcuts..." option will not work with LibreOffice, the desktop shortcut is not deleted.

If nothing is reported out of date, then that's what it is. Run Patch My PC after a week or so to check again. You do not need to manually enable programs on the left column for an update check. You only do that for programs you don't currently have, and want Patch My PC to install them for you automatically.
