The PDN installer shows the message that the installer is not build to support the x86 architecture, see attached image.
Since PMPC is downloading the x64 installer for x86 Windows, this seems to be the problem.

Same issue on Windows 8 x86:

General Questions (Free Home Updater) / Re: File Location

So it seems that there was an error during an update in the past.
You should be safe to uninstall all Opera installations starting with the latest and ending with the oldest.
After this install the latest Opera and go ahead.
Usually the user settings of an application are not removed from the system or the uninstaller asks, if you like to keep them.

Do you find the referenced instances in the uninstaller section of PMPC?
Have you tried uninstalling them through PMPC?

If this does not work, we would have to wait for a PMPC staff member to describe the detection procedure for Opera.

Would you mind giving more detail, so that we could better help you?
What obsolete files?
In which circumstance is this question asked?
#82
You can select any listed software to auto-install, see attached image.
You will have to make sure to first set the correct language in the options, if you run PMPC on a new system, since that setting is not saved to the INI file :'(

Changing the language option in the options of PMPC forces PMPC to download the localized setup, if there is one available.
This setting is stored in the registry, so it needs to be selected whenever you copy your settings to a new system.
For Chrome and Thunderbird, there are language packs available to change the lanugage, if you installed the wrong base setup.

Sorry, I have answered to another reply that has vanished  :-[

In general, updating an application while it is running is never a good choice.
While an application is running support DLLs are locked and can only be updated during a reboot.
Since the application is running the current executable will not be removed, since it is locked.
You need to check with the GIMP developers, so they enhance their installer to also remove the old EXE.

- What could be causing it for TeamViewer and only TeamViewer?
You could run the update manually and specify the command line option to create a log file.
Checking the log file could show the root cause of the update issue.

- PMPC Support person Adam Cook says he replicated it on a fresh VM: what might his and mine have in common that could lead to that result?
Due to my system disk being damaged two days ago I had to setup my system from scratch.
A fresh installation also leaves some files behind in the %TMP% folder, which is not really unexpected, since may installers do not clean up their temporary files.

From my point of view you have two options:

  • remove Teamviewer entirely from your system, reboot the system and do a clean installation
  • update manually and check if you can find the root cause of the issue in a log file
#86
I can suggest one more thing:
1. enable the PMPC option to not delete the installer file
2. run the update through PMPC to download the installer file
3. after the update through PMPC, run the installer manually and check if there are any issues reported

If all fails, remove any presents of Teamviewer entirely from your system through "Start => Settings => Apps and Features" and reinstall using PMPC.
#87
Deleting the folder is not un-installing the application.
In addition many installers extract the files to the temporary folder and install from there.
#88
Remove any instance of Teamviewer, reboot the system to get everything cleared and install Teamviewer through PMPC.
#89
Are there more than one entry for Teamviewer with different version numbers in "Apps and Features"?
If so, remove both and install only one instance of Teamviewer.
You may also check the uninstaller section of PMPC, since that lists the 32-bit and 64-bit uninstall entries of the registry separately.
#90
If I remember correctly, Teamviewer is not even restarted after a manual update, since the setting "start with Windows startup" is not enabled by default.
