Title: Upgrading Java with PMP
Post by: rhITsec on April 30, 2021, 02:04:34 PM
Hello Everyone,

I would like to start the investigation process of updating the current deployed version of Java 8 to the latest version via PMP. If I simply download Oracle Java 8 x86 and x64 via the traditional PMP app deployment methodology, will it update Java on my Endpoints to the latest supported version? Or, is there something I need to do which will uninstall old versions of Java first?

If there are threads here that discuss the methodology please feel free to link me to them. I was not able to find them.

Thanks,
Sean

Hi,

If you simply select the Java 8 Products in the Patch My PC Publisher, and provide the installation files for the latest version in the Local Content folder (info here: https://patchmypc.com/local-content-repository-for-licensed-applications-that-require-manual-download (https://patchmypc.com/local-content-repository-for-licensed-applications-that-require-manual-download)), the application that the Publisher creates will include a prescript by default that removes old versions of Java 8 before installing the latest.

Let me know if you'd like me to dive into anything specific or if you have any more questions.

Hi Andrew,

Wondering if you can clarify something for me. I was able to successfully get Java into SCCM. When I view the update in All Software updates, it says only 215 require the x86 version and 8 require the x64 version. I know for a fact that a very large quantity of my endpoints need it (much higher than that) via a Vulnerability Management system report. I am concerned that some endpoints may be missed. Also, what is it using for criteria to install the new version of Java.

Thanks in Advance,
Sean

Hi, You can use the steps defined here: https://patchmypc.com/how-to-view-applicability-rules-and-troubleshoot-detection-states-for-third-party-updates (https://patchmypc.com/how-to-view-applicability-rules-and-troubleshoot-detection-states-for-third-party-updates)
to see the rules we use for applicability and detection. Java 8 will only update older versions of Java 8, so if you have Java 7 earlier, they will not show as applicable.
